Scene in New York

Mary Mattingly's Flock House at Eyebeam

It’s leap week! Leap week comes but once every four years. Celebrate by seeing some art! On Wednesday, artcritical.com editor David Cohen presents his “Leap Year Reflections on André Derain” at the New York Studio School. On Thursday, Mary Mattingly begins a live test of her Flock House living system at Eyebeam, and Dean Project presents “Bumpkin Dandy” an exhibition of work by my fellow Tyler alum, Daniel A. Bruce, that “explores the contradictory nature of human materiality.” In Brooklyn, “Funny Ha Ha,” an exhibition at the Brooklyn Arts Council Gallery explores different approaches to using humor in art. On Friday, if you weren’t able to afford tickets to any of the Whitney Biennial events, Art Connects New York’s less famous Windsor Whitney Biennial opens at Spattered Columns. On Saturday, photogravure guru Lothar Osterburg gives an artist talk at Lesley Heller Workspace, and Observatory in Brooklyn presents “The Pop-Up Museum” of the Gowanus Canal. On Sunday, go to the Rubin Museum of Art to see Scott Shepherd dramatic recitation of The Great Gatsby from memory.

This week’s collection of openings, performances and happenings. (All addresses are in Manhattan unless otherwise noted.)
