A Time in Arcadia

Curious Matter is accepting submissions for consideration in its upcoming exhibition, “A Time in Arcadia.” From Eden to Monsanto, plants are entwined in virtually every aspect of our lives and culture –– whether for nourishment, their medicinal properties or decorative appeal. In sources as divergent as Dutch landscape painting, herbals, or in the work of Andy Goldsworthy, Agnes Denes, or Rob Carter, plant life is abundantly represented in visual art. With the exhibition “A Time in Arcadia” Curious Matter will explore how contemporary artists engage with botany. A color catalogue will accompany the exhibition. All media will be considered. Artworks should not exceed 24″(framed) in any direction for wall hung work. Sculptures will be considered individually, but owing to space limitations small work is most appropriate. Video artists will need to provide their own equipment.

NAPOLEON, a collectively-run project space in Philadelphia, is accepting applications from artists for a solo exhibition, to take place in July. The show opens First Friday, July 5th and close July 26th. The artist will be responsible for supplying all materials required for displaying their work (framing, media equipment, pedestals, hanging wire, etc.). The artist will also be responsible for installation during July 1-5 and will deinstall the exhibition by July 27-28. Gallery dimensions and floor plan can be found on the website.

ACRE is a non-profit based in Chicago. Its Residency Program takes place every summer in rural Southwest Wisconsin and is open to all national and international emerging visual and performing artists and musicians. The program provides artists with the opportunity to expand upon their individual practices as well as take part in optional programming within a collaborative community. ACRE’s 12-day residencies host 25-30 residents at a time. Additionally, visiting artists are invited to conduct studio visits and present lectures, discussions, and workshops.

Visiting Artist Residency and Recent Graduate Residency

Brooklyn Art Space is accepting applications for their Visiting Artist Residency and Recent Graduate Residency programs. The Visiting Artist Residency allows artists to explore their practice and share their artistic experience with the Brooklyn Art Space community.  Each cycle, BAS offers one artist a subsidized semi-private studio membership for six months in addition to exhibition opportunities at Trestle Gallery. The Resident Artist is expected to lead one workshop, one art talk, and one critique during the residency.The Recent Graduate Residency Program is aimed at helping recent BFA and MFA graduates find a foothold in the art world after leaving school. Ten recent graduates are provided with six months of reduced rate membership ($149 per month), and inclusion in the Introductions exhibition each December.

Rhizome is accepting applications for its 2013-2014 Rhizome Commissions cycle, and its Tumblr Internet Art Grant. There are five Rhizome Commissions awards. Rhizome Commissions awards generally range from $1,000 to $5,000. This cycle, they will also have a specific focus on one project that addresses social issues and/or promotes individual advancement through education or participation. The Internet Art Grant will award three commissioning awards with a special focus on projects from emerging artists engaged with Tumblr.
