YANS and RETO: An Action Fest

YANS & RETO (Young And Not Stupid and Radical Even Though Old) is AN ACTION FEST, one-night festival of action art by artists (mainly, but not limited to) over sixty and under thirty. The artists present themselves through short pieces creating energetic, inter-generational encounters. The 2013, fourth YANS & RETO festival is dedicated to $$$. They’re looking for “7 minutes or less” performances, short films, videos, proclamations, comedy, songs, etc…, that deal in extreme ways with money. The festival will take place on October 6th at the Anthology Film Archives.

The Fountains Foundation at 916 is currently accepting submissions for it 2013-14 exhibition calendar. Located at 916 S.Wabash in Chicago,The Fountains Foundation is a not-for-profit exhibition space that is curated by its founder, Leo Selvaggio. Set in a hallway of public drinking fountains, The Foundation presents artists with the opportunity to engage with a non-traditional public in an odd yet intimate space. Through artistic engagement, even the banal and simple act of sipping water, can lead to transformative and provocative experiences. 2D, 3D, text-based, audio-based, and interactive work from emerging and mid-career artists will be considered.

Artists should submit work that investigates the contradictions and possibilities of pop art in the 21st century, specifically how pop artists conceive of their identity as artists in a world of appropriation, whether this type of art making can or should create authentic experiences, and how artists come to terms with profiting from the pop aesthetic.

Rutgers University Paul Robeson Galleries is now accepting proposals for its upcoming 2014 exhibition, “Datascapes: Maps, Charts & Diagrams.” The need to convey data, statistics, and territory in a creative manner is a challenge embraced by artists who have used data abstractions in the forms of maps, charts and diagrams as the basis for their work. Inspirations may include, among other things: looking at how Google Maps have changed perceptions of space, how maps imply a sense of ownership over territory, the way in which many phenomena are documented and remembered through charts and diagrams, how information is collected and shared by government, corporations, and individuals, and their underlying motivations. This exhibition will be accompanied by an exhibition catalogue.

The Children’s Museum of the Arts (CMA) invites artists to submit proposals for “ARTball-INSIDE Out” which will be on view at CMA’s ART AUCTION 2013. “ARTball2013” is a site-specific installation. It should reflect CMA’s particular brand of art making, which encourages young artists ages 10 months to 15 years to explore a wide array of art forms including drawing, painting, sculpture, media arts, installation work and performance art. The selected artist will receive a materials budget of up to $1500 and a commission fee of $5000.

The Jentel Foundation is now accepting applications for its residency program. The foundation awards one month residencies throughout the year to visual artists in any medium and writers in fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry. Located in a spectacular setting on a working cattle ranch in the foothills of Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains, Jentel is 20 miles SE of Sheridan. The award includes a spacious house with common living, dining and recreating areas; a library; a large private bedroom; and a separate low tech/no equipment based private studio with WiFi. Studio spaces are available for four visual artists and two writers each session. Residencies run from the afternoon of the 15th of one month to the morning of the 13th of the following month.

Old Furnace Artist Residency

The Old Furnace Artist Residency is an ongoing project curated by Jon Henry. The residency is currently located in Harrisonburg, Virginia. It is open to all forms of artistry: sculpture, painting, video, sound, conceptual, poetry, fiction writers, etc. Special attention is given to practices which are focused on being social engaged and social justice causes. O.F.A.R. seeks to expose artists to rural communities and nature. The residency is at no cost the participating artists but they will need to provide their own transit to Harrisonburg and during the residency. Participating artists are asked to donate one piece of art to the residency in exchange for the room, board, and food. Residencies can last anywhere from 1 day to 1 month.

The Getty Research Institute and the Getty Villa invite proposals for the 2014–2015 academic year, “Object – Value – Canon,” residential grants and fellowships. The theme aims to explore new methods of art-historical interpretation, shifting from the traditional processes and terminology to a variety of strategies. Object, value, and canon have different significances in other historical and social contexts. A more diverse integration of understudied visual and archaeological objects necessitates a reassessment of the traditional approach in order to enrich the understanding of the world’s artistic heritage. Scholars working on a wide range of topics are invited to submit proposals that engage these challenges and address their impacts in an international and interdisciplinary environment.
