Casey Jex Smith’s “Fiend in the Void” opens tonight at Allegra LaViola

If the upcoming presidential election has you feeling political, check out Casey Jex Smith’s “Fiend in the Void” at Allegra LaViola tonight. The artist, a practicing Mormon, has drawn from religion, politics and sci-fi fantasy to create a timely series of works on paper. The opening will also feature a Dungeons and Dragons inspired performance, the outcome of which will determine Smith’s real-life vote in his swing-state home, Ohio.

On Thursday night, head to CRG for Brian Tolle’s solo exhibition, “Commander in Chief,” which includes 44 numbered sculptures– each singularly focusing on one of the presidents.

And if you politics makes you think of protest, then on Friday, go to Hunter College for a panel discussion about their current exhibition, “Times Square Show Revisited,” which reflects upon “The First Radical Art Show of the ’80s.”

Below, this week’s collection of openings, performances, and happenings. (All locations in Manhattan unless otherwise noted.) Continue reading
